Cavalier SC are the winners of the Cayman Airways U-14 Invitational Youth Cup. They became winners by beating Tottenham Hotspurs in the Final of the tournament 2-0. The two goals came from Shanthamoi Brown and Dwayne Atkinson. Meanwhile, Harbour View FC, the other Jamaican team participating in the Invitational Youth Cup finished 4th after losing to Gillingham 5-3 on penalties.
To reach the final of the competition, Cavalier SC, coached by Raymond Watson, played 5 matches and were victorious in all five after beating Gillingham FC from England 2-0 on the same day they arrived on the island. Cavalier then returned the following day to hammer IFFDC from the United States, one of the two invited US teams, 11-0. They also beat the Academy Sports Club of the Cayman Islands 5-1 and Harbour View FC of Jamaica 2-0.
Cavalier walked away from the eight-team six-day championship that included two teams each from hosts Cayman, the USA, England and Jamaica, by stealing the spotlight with the most goals scored in the tournament with 17.
Skipper Michael Allen was the tournament’s MVP and second highest goalscorer with four goals for second to Brown on nine.
He said “We performed beyond expectations. This is not to say we did not train with conviction. I knew that we put in the hard work but what was fascinating is the way we gelled as a team. For my own performance it was heartening to hear the coach’s remark that my personal performance was one of the best in the team and that was very encouraging. But even more encouraging was the way we all put our heads down and played together for the team. I attend Kingston College at present and after school I would like to be a professional footballer. One of the very best.”
